The gene is the basic physical unit of inheritance. Genes are passed from parents to offspring and contain the information needed to specify traits. Genes are arranged, one after another, on structures called chromosomes. A chromosome contains a single, long DNA molecule, only a portion of which corresponds to a single gene.

Clinical Trails

A clinical trial is a type of research that studies a test or treatment given to people. Clinical trials study how safe and helpful tests and treatments are. When found to be safe and helpful, they may become tomorrow’s standard of care. Clinical trials have risks too. Like any test or treatment, there may be side effects. Also, new tests or treatments may not work as good as or better than the one now in use.

Experimental therapeutics focuses on the study of development of new treatments for human disease. Research in experimental therapeutics seeks to understand human diseases from the molecular level to the whole organism in order to develop rational approaches for new pharmacological treatments. In addition, experimental therapeutics includes the development of new therapies through systematic investigation at increasing levels of complexity ranging from individual molecules and proteins, to cellular and tissue based assays and to the whole organism.

Cancer Metastatics

Metastatic cancer is commonly called stage IV cancer or advanced cancer. It occurs when cancer cells break off from the original tumor, spread through the bloodstream or lymph vessels to another part of the body, and form new tumors. Even after cancer has invaded another organ, it is still identified by the place where it developed. For example, colon cancer that has spread to the liver is not the same as primary liver cancer. Instead, it is called liver metastases or secondary liver cancer. Breast cancer that spreads to the lungs is still treated like breast cancer, not like lung cancer. If the original tumor responds to the hormone-blocking drugs that are often used to treat breast cancer, then metastatic lung tumors are likely to respond to them as well.
